Anaerobic Reactor

High rate anaerobic reactor for liquid effluents

Clearfleau's Anaerobic Reactor is designed for the high-rate conversion of suspended (volatile) solids from liquid effluent into biogas and the efficient removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The fully mixed Anaerobic Reactor creates optimal contact between solids and the microbes that digest them.

Liquid food waste can be expensive to treat in municipal sewage plants, where costs (based on the 'Mogden formula') continue to increase. On-site anaerobic treatment will reduce organic load and generate energy. The Anaerobic Reactor treats brewery, dairy and food manufacturing effluent in on-site plants. A mobile pilot unit is available for trials.

The primary innovation in the Anaerobic Reactor is an integral gas/solids/liquid separation system. The reduced hydraulic retention time allows the reactor to operate at higher loads than previously achieved, optimising efficiency and enhancing biogas output. Other advantages include:

  • Reduced reactor size - and tank build cost
  • Reduced tank capacity - and ease of mixing
  • Improved biogas quality (sulphur removal)
  • Potential for combination with zero emission fuel cells

Separating the solids retention time from the liquid (or hydraulic) retention time within the reactor is the key to the design and effective operation of Clearfleau's high-rate Anaerobic Reactor. In comparison, more established liquid anaerobic reactors (i.e. UASB or EGSB plants) have more complex tank designs with increased building and operating costs. Clearfleau’s Reactor can be installed on confined sites.
