Brewery and Drinks Waste

Reducing effluent treatment costs and environmental impacts

Liquid anaerobic digestion is an ideal process for the treatment of brewery effluents. Clearfleau designs and installs innovative customised treatment packages for the brewing and drinks processing sector.

Clearfleau's systems are designed to reduce the net costs and the environmental impact of waste disposal. They are suited to combined treatment of liquid brewery effluents, including:

  • Waste water arising from the brewing process
  • Wash down residues and effluents
  • Evaporation water from the malting process
  • Waste product and other liquid bio-waste

Clearfleau's Anaerobic Reactor will convert suspended (volatile) solids from brewery effluents into biogas. It can be integrated into existing treatment systems and retro-fitted in existing storage tanks.

Detailed waste analysis is required to evaluate biogas potential. You can assess effectiveness on site with our mobile pilot unit. In addition to reduced disposal costs, other benefits include:

  • Reduced effluent discharge and haulage of waste off-site
  • Generation of electricity and surplus heat for use on-site
  • Reduced environmental impact and lower carbon footprint
  • Potential for recycled water to partly replace existing supply

Clearfleau is involved in discussions on industry needs with the UK’s Brewing Research Institute, the respected technology and information organisation that services the brewing, malting and drinks sectors.  This has initiated a project to assess water recycling options in the barley malting process. Our processes are also suited to applications in the cider making and soft drinks sectors.

The UK’s Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control regulations (IPPC) require companies to make continual improvements in environmental standards.  ISO 14001 on environmental management requires periodic audit of environmental systems and management. The brewing industry has made commitments to reduce energy consumption and its carbon footprint, and to recycle more water.  As with renewable energy, water recycling investment is eligible for enhanced capital allowances (ECAs).
