Membrane Bio-reactor (MBR) for residual effluent treatment
Most post AD treatment residues contain nutrients (inc. nitrates and phosphates) that must be removed if water recycling is required, or continued sewer discharge is not an option. Membrane based nutrient removal can be adapted to site requirements and nutrient rich residual solids can be used as a soil improver.
The use of micro-filtration membranes with aerobic treatment is an established process. MBR technology can be applied to digestate from Clearfleau’s high rate digester which exit the process with a load reduction of 95% or more. Permeable membranes retain residual solids and other contaminants, producing cleansed water suitable for recycling, re-use, or watercourse discharge.
Membrane Bio-reactor (MBR) technology combines biological treatment (for nutrient removal) with advanced micro-filtration membranes. These non-block membranes do not require high pressure to force cleansed effluent through the porous surface.
Clearfleau's small scale MBR unit can be used on its own or combined with the Anaerobic units where appropriate. The technology is suited to a range of industrial effluents and wastewaters. It is an easy to install (it only requires power and a water supply), operate and maintain option for your effluent problems.
Membrane treatment, post digestion, will achieve grey water recycling standards or meet local watercourse discharge and regulatory consents. Industrial water re-use equipment may qualify for tax efficient Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs). The ECA scheme allows businesses to write off 100% of capital equipment, against taxable profits in the year of purchase. This will effectively provide tax relief worth £28 of every £100 spent on a capital project for that year.
The permeate (cleansed water with very low turbidity) is of a quality suitable for:
- Watercourse discharge (subject to consent verification)
- Re-use on-site - for steam generation or plant wash down
- Recycling for other uses (with further treatment or irrigation)
Clearfleau's MBR designs offer the highest level of waste water treatment. The non-block, hollow fibre membrane configurations will achieve stringent discharge requirements.
